I was in Durban last week running a workshop for
a corporate client on "Being An Entrepreneur In The Organisation".
It is part of an ongoing, country wide process to implement a new Human
Resources strategy, which I am helping them develop.
It is a successful business, the market leader in South Africa,
profitable, and growing. It comprises a number of stand alone brands,
and I was running the workshop with the regional leaders from some of
these businesses. The objective was to recognise, support and
inform people with being themselves for a living, as a strategy for
innovation and growth.
The workshop is process based, not content based: I work with people
and their talents and insights, not with a body of knowledge or
material. I have tools I take in and share as we go, while I manage a
process of self-discovery, strategy development, and the alignment of
personal purpose and business vision.
What I do, in essence, is I get people in touch with an experience. I
help them find it in themselves. I
do not try to transfer knowledge but awaken intelligence. I get
people feeling deeper, thinking bigger, and opening to potential. I
support this with tools to use along
the way.
I have given the group things to do and I will be seeing them again
next week for the second part of the process, to check in and, once
again, get them in touch with the "being yourself for a living"
experience.
They go back to business and the seeds
germinate and begin to take root. Much of the experience we worked with
in the room fades, as is natural, so we meet again and get in touch
with it again, going further into it.
With repeated exposure and ongoing action and reflection, their lives
and businesses grow towards a space where they, and the people around
them, are all being themselves for a living, with all the benefits.
The change is existential, whole, a Gestalt. It is a shift in being.
The result is business with more art, more soul, more meaning, more
colour, more life, and more money.
What would it feel like to be yourself for a living? Get in touch with
the whole experience and keep being
it. You and your business will flourish from there.

This serves as an official announcement that we have named our band. We
are...
The Black Hotels.
Getting to
this point was quite a trip, but we finally agreed on it this weekend
over a bottle of champagne.
We tried many ideas but, for one or other reason, each name didn't
work. It was a surprisingly difficult process. Every name we came up
with
had already been taken by a band somewhere on the planet. Even names
that came out of our lyrics
had a spot on MySpace.com already!
Initially I came up with what I thought was a classic name, The Rolling
Stones,
but the rest of the band told me that it was
taken. Then I thought of The Beatles, spelled with an 'a', but
apparently that was taken, too! So then I got really creative: The Red
Hot Chili Peppers. I was sure no-one could possible have thought of
that, especially with 'chili' spelled that way, but sure enough...
Anyway, at one point, we tried a voting process where the four
band members ranked
their choices from a list of 8 options, but the name that came out
didn't
feel completely right, plus someone already had it. So we kept looking.
When we found The Black
Hotels, we still weren't sure, and everyone we spoke to had a
different opinion.
It was only with being booked for a string of live dates that we
decided.
