Cruel Subjects - The Black Hotels

This is the "being yourself for a living" newsletter, coming to you from Robin Wheeler in Johannesburg, to keep in touch and, in this issue, share some insights and suggestions on:

H A V I N G   F U N !

18 April 2007

So far, 2007 has been such a busy year for me, and it looks like that will keep building. This this week, I have some time to myself to do the work one can do only in solitude. When I was on tour around South Africa with the band in March, or in Cape Town with a corporate client last week, time to myself felt distant and divine. Now, here it is.

And it is divine! It is quite an adjustment from all the interactive busy-ness, and fulfilling in a very different way. Solitude happens at a different pace, and in a different space, to consulting, training, travelling and playing music. It has a different fragrance and flavour of enjoyment.

It is giving me time to write, time to rest, time to reflect, time to strategise, and time to do all the other essential work awaiting my attention. Something I realised this morning is that it is giving me a chance to have fun. I am free! I am happy! I have my ideal life, right here, right now!

In the now, you can be nothing but happy. If you are not happy, you are not in the now. You are remembering the past or worrying about the future, but you are not in the now. The now is blissful, and tremendous fun. Presence dances in delight.

I read something by Osho this morning that sparked my writing, which said that "fun is far more sacred than prayer". Having fun is more spirited than praying. He said that the world is a circus to be enjoyed every moment, that seriousness is a sickness and fun is enlightening.

I know this is true! I have been very serious and it has been all ego, all problems, all a waste of life. The tour with the band last month, and helping people be themselves for a living at work, were such fun because I was going with the flow, doing what I love, creating meaning and discovering the wonders of the world, inner and outer.

Fun catches you by surprise, because we are usually so burdened by societal beliefs and conditionings, but when it comes we find freedom and joy.

Freedom, joy and fun are where you are right now. Nothing is serious except the ego's obsession with itself. Our true nature, or true selves, are timeless, problemless, weightless, and the most fun you can imagine. In fact, even more fun than that!

If you are not having fun, you are not being yourself. If you are not being yourself, what the hell are you doing?

Be yourself, in the now, and enjoy.

On 5 March 2007, The Star Workplace ran a new article of mine called Building On Your Strengths, which I have posted on my website for you here.

The Afrikaans Sunday newspaper, Rapport, interviewed me on being yourself for a living and ran a piece in their careers section on 18 March 2007, which was called "Word 'n wenner deur aan te pas".

The Black Hotels
had a wonderful South African tour in March, along with four other emerging bands, which included great national and regional media coverage along the way.

The Business Day Weekender said in a recent feature that "The Black Hotels have all the ingredients to become legends." Another journalist this week said, "
I caught The Black Hotels the other night and to put it bluntly they were sh*t hot and tight as hell. It looks like their recent first national tour did them the world of good and with a debut EP on the way they really are a band to watch."

To build on the momentum created, we will be on tour again in May and June. The list of dates and venues is on our page on MySpace.com.

Being yourself for a living is the ultimate. Let me know if you need my help in your company. Read, below, what a delegate in Cape Town yesterday said after the course.

All the best,

Robin

"This programme has mobilsed me to approach my role in the company with an entrepreneurial spirit. This will empower me to self-actualise, which is beneficial
to both myself and the company.

Thank you, Robin, for facilitating my heart and mind to meet! You are my muse in putting my dreams into action. The feedback from individuals today is proof that you have not only transferred  ideas, but you have moved people to apply these tools, and they are already experiencing the effects and benefits in their lives."
