I have been enjoying writing for my blog. Posts are quick to read, usually under 300 words, and go up here every few days.

Motivation
by Robin Wheeler

(appeared in The Star Workplace on 19 January with the heading: Control and manipulation gone for good)

If you are having to motivate your staff, they are in the wrong jobs. It is that simple.

Even more likely, you are in the wrong business. You are pursuing something purely for profit or based on outdated assumptions that are simply no longer relevant. That is why people are not motivated.

People are inherently inspired, what kills their enthusiasm is a life they do not want to live. Conditioning, restrictions, expectations and unyielding compromise for the sake of income throttles the life out of them.

You thwart them and then you try to motivate them! Well, those days are gone. In the past you could still incentivise and adrenalise people but too much has changed. Now, nothing less than authenticity will do.

People have been alienated for too long to keep pushing without genuine energy. They are too stressed to just keep taking the compounding pressure, and too alert now to be hoodwinked into following misleading leadership.

People are waking up and if your business is not ready for profound change, it may soon be history, no matter how big. If you are not prepared to re-conceptualise your commodity, revolutionise your relationship with your market and your people, even change the currency of your exchange, you are not be prepared at all.

The global economic and systemic collapse at the moment is just the beginning, the early stages of the disappearance of what was insubstantial to start with. Of course, there will be a scurry to restore the status quo by those for whom it serves, but that cannot work.

Too much has been build on an unsustainable foundation for too long. The change is quantum in nature, a leap where the emerging state of consciousness cannot be extrapolated from the old. And the old is crumbling fast.

You will no longer be able to manipulate people into living lives they do not want, and doing work they do not love or believe in and that does not fulfill them, just because they are afraid of losing what little they have.

You will no longer be able to gear your business around profit at the expense of the planet and the well being of the population. You will no longer be able to prosper financially by exploiting and dehumanising people, because money is losing its meaning and individuals are waking and standing up.

Entrepreneurs will not watch banks get rescued for their crimes while small business has to fend for itself. People will stop voting for politicians who cost money and deliver only empty promises and bigger problems.

Militaries that cost two thirds of the gross domestic product to keep the world violent must give way to global well being. The business of war can no longer hide behind the propaganda of the treacherous few who manage it for their personal gain.

It remains to be seen exactly how the change is going to unfold. What is for certain, though, is that it is here, happening fast and for the better.

We are all going to be more awake, more alive, more intelligent and much happier. We are discovering our authenticity, at the expense of our collective stupidity, instead of the other way round.

So let it happen. Let the false fall away. Step into the real. It is the future of business, work and the world. It is the only way to survive, the real way to thrive.

Be yourself for a living and help everyone do the same.
