The Meaning of Life

by Robin Wheeler, February 2004

Life has no meaning. This is a good thing. To search for meaning is lost. To be here now is found.

The notion of “meaning” is in the head, not the heart or the soul. It is an intellectual fixation rather than the spiritual quest it masquerades as. It is a conundrum of the mind to keep you preoccupied while life passes you by.

The search for meaning implies insufficiency in the present. It assumes that the now is wrong. How can the now be wrong? The search for meaning is meaningless, simply stupid, because the present is complete.

I have just walked along a nearby river. The midday air was hot, humid and electric. After rain last night, the river was fresh. In one spot, the water was at such a level that a slightly protruding rock was silently weaving whirling spirals into it.

It was so beautiful. Just watching, I felt my body relax, my heart open and my spirit rise. This divine occurrence was the universe celebrating itself, for no reason or goal whatsoever. It was not searching for meaning, it was enjoying existence.

It is through the search that presence is lost. What are you searching for? If you are looking for fulfilment or bliss, those are found in presence. If you are looking for yourself, you are already here!

So stop looking and be found. See your seeking for what it is, and let it fall away. Let the infinite delight of the moment emerge. Flow with the river of life.

Being is not a means to an end but an end in itself, a culmination. The now is the goal of life being achieved. Everything has been leading up to the present, and everything is pouring into it.

Life has no meaning, it is a celebration. Be and enjoy yourself.
